Southwest Utah is experiencing rapid growth and development, as communities struggle to meet the demand for housing as people from other states relocate for work, retirement and investment. Due to the proximity to National Parks, particularly Zion National Park, much of the growth has been directed towards the short term rental market. Since the introduction of Utah's "The Mighty 5 Utah" marketing campaign, visitation at Zion National Park has grown from 2.7 million in 2009, to 4.5 million in 2019.

As Developers clear the land to build, they reinterpret and rearrange the landscape to be more aesthetically pleasing for potential buyers; a taming of the terrain that insinuates a connection to the surrounding, often inhospitable, landscape.
